Sanitizer or Soap and Water

Share this:

To sterilize and to keep your home clean what is truly the best way? Sanitizer, with a high alcohol content? or soap and water with its cleaning agents. Here in this article we will break down the differences and the ways to best utilize both.
There are many other chemicals that can be used and they have their place, but we today will specifically talk about Sanitizer, Soap and water.

Sanitizer
Sanitizer has been very popular as of late, thanks to its versatility during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

How much Alcohol is in Sanitizer?

Sanitizer must contain at least 60% Alcohol. The alcohol in hand sanitizers is in the form of either ethyl alcohol, also known as ethanol, or isopropyl alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol. Humectants, like glycerin, which help prevent skin dryness, and emollients or moisturizers, like aloe vera are added.

How to properly use Sanitizer?

Sanitizer does its best work, when it is left on your hand. That is the opposite of what we learned with soap and water. Yes! you do not want to scrub it off, rather leave it on your hand to dry. Step 1. Pour it on the palm of your hand. Step 2. Spread it on both hands and cover as much of your skin as possible. Step 3. Rub in and let dry.

How does Sanitizer work?

The alcohol kills the germs. It breaks down the germs by depleating the proteins that keep the germ alive. In doing so, what you are doing is killing germs as you let the sanitizer dry.

Soap and Water

We all grew up on soap and water, and being taught how to wash our hands, by soaping and keep under running water for at least 20 seconds.

What is soap made of?

Soaps are made from fats and oils that react with lye, Sodium Hydroxide. Fats like lard or tallow are used in soaps to keep it from dissolving quickly under water. Soaps usually contain triclosan or triclocarban this is for their anti-bactierial agents. Many of the large name brand soaps are detergents that have thickener agents.

How to properly use soap and water?

  1. Have warm water running 2. Lather the soap in your hands, cover both hands. 3. Scrub the soap in your hands underneath the warm water for 20 seconds. 4. Dry hands with clean paper towel or cloth towel.  Here is a link from the WHO:

How does Soap clean?

Soaps are elmusifiers. Elmusifers are capable of dispersing one liquid into another immiscible liquid. This means that while oil (which attracts dirt) does not naturally mix with water, soap can suspend oil/dirt in such a way that it can be removed. Remember sanitizer kills through alcohol, where soap and water literally absorbs the germs and washs them away.

Overall both sanitizer and soap have their place. Sanitizer is versatile and can be used where soap and water are not readily available.

Soap and water is going to be able to give a deeper clean as it has oils that literally scrub away soil.
